Studying counselling at uni will open doors to a career in a ‘helping profession’, as you’ll learn and practice counselling skills and techniques and develop your ability to critically analyse and apply theory to personal experiences and circumstances. Counselling is often studied alongside other disciplines like therapy, psychology and mentoring, and courses cover topics including mental health and wellbeing, counselling perspectives and therapeutic skills. Many counselling courses also include practical experiences and work placements, giving you the chance to work with real patients and put your knowledge into practice. This broad and multi-disciplinary subject area will help prepare you for a career in numerous job roles, such as teaching, counselling, nursing, social work and youth work. You may need to go into postgraduate study before getting employment in some of these roles.
