The beautiful University of Aberdeen dates to 1495 when it was founded by William Elphinstone with the founding principle of ‘open to all and dedicated to the pursuit of truth in the service of others.’ It is Scotland’s third oldest university and the fifth oldest in the UK, and many of its original subjects are still taught to this day.

The university also has a Postgraduate Research School and a wide variety of Research Institutes and Centres. There are two campuses at Kings College (1495) and Foresterhill, both linked by bus. Kings College is situated in historic ‘Old Aberdeen,’ which provides a visual feast of heritage and the stunning contemporary Sir Duncan Rice library. The library boasts 360-degree panoramic views across the city, harbour and beach. The university’s state-of-the-art Science Teaching Hub opened in early 2022, providing a modern learning space across a number of disciplines including chemistry, medical sciences and biological sciences.
The university encourages major innovation and researchers have won five Nobel prizes from ground-breaking discoveries such as life changing Insulin, the development of the first MRI scanner, partition chromatography, radioactive isotopes, and advances to fight world hunger.
Aberdeen is a cosmopolitan sea trading city which offers an eclectic mix of beautiful granite architecture, cobbled streets and modern retail experience whilst being home to a global oil and gas industry. The city is surprisingly close to Royal Deeside, the seaside and beach, and it is easily connected to the highlands and islands.

ASK A QUESTIONStudents can choose from a wide range of accommodation which is either self-catered or catered. All main UK supermarkets are represented in Aberdeen and there are plenty of convenience stores and specialist international stores located across the city.
Accommodation is either based on-campus or a short walk away. Hillhead student village is a pleasant walk through beautiful architecture in Old Aberdeen and Seton Park and it is very handy for the university.
Accommodation is guaranteed for all new students and rents are inclusive of bills. There is unlimited Wi-Fi, CCTV, free parking, meeting rooms, a café bar, and plenty of fun events. Student Residents Assistants support students with advice and information, and they organise workshops such as movie and popcorn nights, cookery classes, bands, language cafes, exercise, food and drink, BBQs and more. There are also dedicated quiet and alcohol-free blocks.

King’s Campus boasts the state-of-the-art Sir Duncan Rice Library, which has been named one of the most beautiful in the world (CEOWORLD magazine 2016) and its eight floors house the largest of the university's modern collections. Apart from stunning architecture it also houses extensive collections of new and archive materials, offering a comprehensive range of research materials which are also available online.
The Sports Village offers students an aquatics centre, indoor football pitch, indoor athletics area, fitness suite, badminton and squash courts and cafes. The campus is supported by free Wi-fi, museums, historic streets and cafes, a botanic garden and a range of eating areas to suite all tastes and diets internationally.
Infohub acts as the first point of contact for student support services. It helps students with advice about finance, disability support, student life, new student induction, arrival, registration and support with new IT and much more. The Language Centre offers learning support and materials in up to 50 different languages.

Aberdeen University Students Association is the committee-led voice of the students at University of Aberdeen. There are a variety of ways to become involved with the union and these include joining or starting a society, becoming involved in sports and student groups, or by campaigning.
AUSA connects students to volunteering activities in Aberdeen, training activities, and raising and giving activities. AUSA also supports student employability with many activities to enhance their CVs. The union also helps further with external accommodation providers, budgeting, support and advice, and there is even a nightline service if students need someone to talk to. The range of student activities on offer gives learners plenty of opportunities to make friends and widen their interests whilst studying.
Aberdeen University Students Association hold elections to ensure that students can have an active voice on their committee, and they organise a wide range of events to enable students to have fun, learn something new and mix with students from all over the world.

There are over 100 clubs and societies at the university covering a vast range of interests. Aberdeen is a relatively small, but very diverse city which is known as a base for the oil and gas industry, as well as its picturesque surroundings. The city has had an interesting history of friendly invasion by traders from the low countries, with a stunning range of architecture which reflects the different periods of trade in the city. Visitors can enjoy cobbled old-world streets, European grand architecture in silver granite, boutique shops and cafes and five modern shopping centres with a wide range of known UK shops, international brands and cafes to suit all tastes.
There is a wide variety of entertainment to suit all tastes with a theatre, arts centre, music hall, museums, an art gallery, and many cafes and restaurants across all tastes and cultures. Students can choose from clubs, wine bars, jazz clubs, comedy clubs, cafes and much more besides in a city where there is a vibrant nightlife.
The city enjoys a beach and harbour, with ferries to Orkney and Shetland, plus parks and cycle routes to Deeside and the Cairngorm Mountains. There are regular trains South to Edinburgh and Glasgow, plus York and London, and trains West to Inverness, Wick, Thurso and Kyle of Lochalsh. Buses serve the city, campus, airport and UK cities.
The airport is around five miles from the city centre with direct flights to UK cities, Amsterdam, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal, Poland, Switzerland, Finland, Malta, France, and Latvia plus indirect flights via hubs to world destinations.

You'll be shocked by the number of clubs and societies on offer at University of Aberdeen. There's something for everyone! As well as being able to pick different clubs and societies, most courses let you choose modules at different points through your degree.
As well as personalising your course through optional modules, you may have the chance to do a work placement during your studies. Developing your professional skills through work placements is a great way to add to your CV and boost your employability.
If you want a job you love (and who doesn't?), getting a job in a field you're passionate about is a great place to start. By studying a subject you really enjoy, you'll be qualified for a range of jobs relating to that subject, which you'll hopefully love.
For those who aren't ready to give up on education after an undergraduate degree, you'll have the opportunity to progress to postgraduate study such as a master's or even a PhD.
