VISIT WEBSITEThe university has a growing and vibrant community of academic innovators producing high-quality international and world-leading research across an expanded range of disciplines. This benefits students, who receive an education that is current and deeply relevant to their chosen industry.
Many academics have won renowned awards for their work. For example, Lubaina Himid CBE was awarded the 2017 Turner Prize, one of the most prestigious international visual arts awards, while Professor Robert Walsh was awarded a prestigious Royal Astronomical Society medal, and UCLan academic Wajid Khan – senior lecturer and course leader – was appointed as the youngest opposition life peer in the House of Lords.
The university also recognizes that simply having a degree is not what sets students apart in competitive job markets. A strength of UCLan is their dedication to developing work-ready graduates who can shine against other candidates.
That’s why all UCLan’s courses provide ample practical experience for students to sharpen their skills and why many courses offer work experience placements, study abroad opportunities or come with approval/accreditation from professional associations.
The University of Central Lancashire Students’ Union (SU) has won multiple awards for its work and commitment to students, who remain at the heart of everything it does. Every UCLan student automatically becomes a member of the SU upon enrolment.
Leading the SU team are the elected officers, who are actively involved in making important university decisions alongside the university’s most senior staff, representing the student voice at the highest level. Not only do they defend students’ rights, but they also run campaigns to raise awareness of important issues.
Supporting them are school presidents and course reps, who act as a link between students and staff. They work hard to gather student feedback and work with lecturers and senior management to enact positive changes.
In addition to representing students, the SU run the Advice and Representation Centre, where students can go to get free, confidential, judgement-free professional advice on a wide range of issues—both academic and personal – from trained staff.
Finally, the SU work hard to ensure that students’ experience of university is the best it can be. They manage over 100 sports clubs and societies, run Pulse Media (the student-led radio, TV and magazine), arrange volunteering opportunities, run skills workshops, and organise a wide range of fun social events.
The SU also run a Safety Bus to help keep UCLan one of the safest places to study , which ensures students get home safe after a late night out.

“The new student centre is a really good place to relax or work in between lectures and it’s helpful that Careers, Student Support and Student Well-being are all located here.”

There are over 100 clubs and societies to get involved in at UCLan. Societies are run by students and supported by the students’ union, and so if students can’t find a society that interests them, the union can help them set one up.
Sporty students have over 35 sports clubs to try out, covering American football, basketball, dance, equestrian, golf, mountaineering, and men’s and women’s football and rugby. Many of the sports clubs play competitively in the university’s students’ union leagues, however, there are also ‘turn up and play’ sessions for those who just want to play for fun.
UCLan’s 70 societies provide the perfect way for students to get out and meet new people with shared interests. There are societies covering hobbies and interests, including airsoft, BAME, board games, British sign language, chess, first aid, LGBTQ+, poker, and Sci-Fi.
Academic societies cover subjects such as business and management, dermatology, English, mathematics, and occupational therapy, while faith-based societies cover Ahlulbayt, Catholic, Christian, Pagan, and Sikh faiths.
In addition to sports clubs and societies, the students’ union also offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities. Students can get involved as much or as little as they like and can even log their volunteering hours to achieve the Livesey Award – a great addition to any CV.
