Located in the West Midlands, just 30 miles outside Birmingham, Worcester is a compact, friendly cathedral city with a vibrant student community. The local university, the University of Worcester, has over 10,000 students, so there’s lots of opportunities for socialising, and lots of events catering to students around the city. If the University of Worcester is on your radar but you want to know more about what it’s like to study in the city, our guide to all the key elements of student life in Worcester is perfect to answer all your questions.

Student activities in Worcester

One of the most exciting things you can do in Worcester (and possibly anywhere) is a visit to Simply Alpaca. You can book alpaca walks, alpaca picnics, and even alpaca parties! Now if that’s not the coolest thing ever, we don’t know what is. If you’re looking for something a little bit more sophisticated than alpacas, then the Piston Gin Distillery offers tours, and you can even distil your own gin.

Nightlife in Worcester

There’s a range of nightlife to check out in Worcester, thanks in part to the large student population of the city. If you’re looking for a nice pub to hang out and grab a few pints in, then check out the Paul Pry, which is also worth going to on a Sunday afternoon for a roast. If you’re thinking more about getting some cocktails and having a bit of a gossip, then try Keystones Cocktail Club or Tonic Bar. And of course, if you want a big night out with DJs and dancing, then you’ll want to hit up Worcester’s clubs. Popular nightclubs include Tramps Nightclub (yes it’s really called that), and Sin.

Student accommodation in Worcester

In your first year, you’ll probably live in uni halls, which cost between £122 and £207 per week at the University of Worcester. All rooms here are self-catered and arranged in clusters of flats. Your utility bills are all included in your rent.

From your second year, you’ll probably start renting privately in the city. If you’re sharing with mates, then you can expect to find three-bed flats for around £1100 per month, which is under £400 each per month. You’ll have to remember to factor in the cost of utility bills, which could be up to £95 per person per month, but depends on how many people are sharing the house.

Transport in Worcester

If you need to use transport other than walking and cycling, we’d recommend getting a monthly travel pass for £65 so you can use the local buses as much as you need for around £2 per day. For travelling further afield, you’ll find a train station connecting Worcester to cities including London and Birmingham.

Student costs in Worcester

Once you’ve paid your two major expenses – tuition fees and rent – you’ll have to create a budget for the rest of your money so you don’t overspend. The next thing you’ll need to consider is your groceries. Worcester has fairly average grocery prices for the UK, but it’s still worth shopping around to find the best deals and making use of the budget supermarkets. On average, in the UK a student spends around £30 per week on groceries.

As well as buying your groceries, you’ll want some budget for socialising! In Worcester, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant comes to an average of £12.50, and a beer is usually around £4. If you’re pushing the boat out and going for a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant, you’ll be looking at a bill of around £58.

As well as these regular expenses, you’ll also have one-off payments to consider. These might be things like memberships to societies, or tickets to events run by societies. You’ll also need some money each term to buy your course books and pay for any other supplies you might need such as printer credits and stationery. It’s also always handy to have some money you can spend on things like gifts for friends, or to buy new clothes, so make sure you figure out how much you’re likely to want to put towards those things.
