1) York Minster 

Good for: An awe-inspiring, historic experience.

2) City Walls

Why you should go: The City Walls of York date back to Roman times and are one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Europe. The Walls are three miles long and surround the old town. They offer stunning views over the city and provide an insight into how it was defended during medieval times. You can also explore some of York's most important historical sites from atop these walls such as Clifford’s Tower and Bootham Bar. 

3) Shambles 

Good for: A photo op and visiting some independent shops.

What it is: A quaint old shopping street and one of the narrowest streets in England.

Why you should go: The Shambles in York is one of the oldest and most unique historic streets in England, with a history dating back to medieval times. This charming, narrow cobblestone street has barely changed since then, with many original buildings still standing, including some that are over 500 years old. It is an incredibly atmospheric place to explore, with quaint shops selling a range of goods from glassware to fudge.  

4) House of Trembling Madness 

Good for: A drink in a unique bar. 

What it is: A city centre bar with some unusual décor. 

Why you should go: The House of Trembling Madness is located in an old building near the city walls and has an atmosphere to perfectly match its name. The quirky pub and restaurant has been serving up some of the best ales and food in York for over 30 years. With its eccentric décor, live music nights, and collection of vintage beers from around the world, it's no wonder this place is popular with students. Whether you're looking to grab a bite to eat or just want to enjoy some drinks with friends, The House of Trembling Madness is definitely worth checking out during your studies. 

5) Jorvik Viking Centre 

Good for: Learning about the Viking history of York. 

What it is: An immersive experience offering insight into the Viking settlement in the area. 

Why you should go: The Jorvik Viking Centre is a student-friendly attraction in York that offers an exciting and immersive experience. Located near the city walls, this interactive museum allows visitors to explore the ancient city of Jorvik as it was during the time of the Vikings, with recreated buildings, artefacts, and costumed characters. The centre even offers authentic Viking smells, so it isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s a great day out and you’ll learn a lot about the city’s rich history. 

6) Boat trip on the River Ouse 

Good for: Seeing York’s sights. 

What it is: Exactly what it sounds like – a boat trip down the river running through the city. 

Why you should go: A leisurely cruise down the River Ouse is a great way to take in some of the city's stunning scenery and explore its rich history. As you sail along, you can admire the views York has to offer, or simply relax and watch the wildlife go by. 7) National Railway Museum

8) Theatre Royal

What it is: A famous and fancy café in the city centre. 

Why you should go: This iconic cafe has been serving up delicious treats since 1937 and is one of the most beloved spots in town. It isn’t cheap, so you won’t want to come here every week, but it’s a great place to go if you’re wanting to splash out and feel a bit posh. With its traditional decor, homemade cakes and pastries, and cozy atmosphere – Betty's Cafe is the perfect place for students looking to take a break from their studies.  

10) Kuda 

Good for: Having a dance. 

What it is: A popular nightclub among students.
