Data scientists take raw data and turn it into meaningful reports or information in order to support the business. In this role, you’ll be working with software, AI and machine learning to create visualisations and reports based on the raw data you gather.
What does a data scientist do?
In a role as a data scientist, you’ll be taking data and statistics and turning into reports or visualisations that the company can use. You may be using your skills to track trends, or to identify issues within the business which you can then model solutions to. You’ll get to work with software, AI and machine learning to help you make your analyses and turn raw data into useful information.
What’s it like to work as a data scientist?
The daily tasks you’ll be expected to do will vary slightly depending on the business you’re working for and your exact position. However, some responsibilities you can expect to encounter at some point in your career include:
- Using data to identify business problems and find solutions
- Gathering and managing data from multiple sources
- Creating models and test hypotheses using data
- Using statistical software to manipulate, analyse and visualise data
- Building mathematical and analytical models using algorithms and machine learning
- Keeping up to date with the latest data science developments
What skills do you need to be a data scientist?
Naturally, you’ll need to develop a wide range of skills in order to succeed as a data scientist. These include:
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail

- Confidence with database and analysis programming software
- Ability to work under pressure
- Able to stick to deadlines
- Teamwork
- Organisation
- Presentation skills
How much does a data scientist earn?
Graduate salaries are usually between £25,000 and £30,000, with raises to around £40,000 with more experience. Senior data scientists can earn up to around £60,000 and if you become a chief or lead data scientist then your salary could be in the region of £100,000.
How to become a data scientist
While you don’t need a degree to work in data science, the majority of applicants to these jobs have an undergraduate degree. You could search for an entry-level job and work your way up if you prefer, but the most common routes into the industry are:
Study a data science degree
Gaining an undergraduate degree in data science helps you to develop the essential skills needed to succeed in the career and will also help you to secure a job. You may opt to apply for graduate schemes after completing your degree, which can help you get your foot in the door at a company as well as providing further training.
Studying a related degree such as maths or computer science is also a popular option for aspiring data scientists.
Degree apprenticeship
As a degree apprentice, you’ll split your time between working as an apprentice in a data science role and studying at university. Your employer will pay you a salary and will also pay your tuition fees. Usually, these courses take the same length of time as an undergraduate degree. Due to the nature of the apprenticeship, you’ll also get a lot more hands-on experience on this route. Check for apprenticeship opportunities on Find an Apprenticeship.
Study a postgraduate degree
It’s not required, but a postgraduate degree in data science or a related subject will help you to stand out from other applicants. It may also offer you the chance to start to specialise early on. These degrees usually take one or two years to complete.
