Based in the heart of Lincoln on a beautiful green campus, Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has been educating students for 160 years.
BGU's story began in the 1860s as an Anglican teacher training college for women, which makes it one of the oldest higher education institutions in the UK. Now, the university offers a wide portfolio of exciting degree courses, and currently educates over 2,000 students in a wide range of subjects from undergraduate degree level to PhD, and much more in between.
Bishop Grosseteste University offers a leading student experience in the UK, having placed first in the country for student support, accommodation and student halls and third place for career prospects according to the 2023 Whatuni Student Choice Awards.
As well as a constantly evolving portfolio of courses, BGU has invested in a modern library and state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces to ensure students get the most out of their time at university.
BGU's single site campus is just a short walk away from Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the old Roman city. Lincoln is an extremely student-friendly city. Retaining the same quaintness and charm of smaller cities by managing to blend its historical past with the contemporary seamlessly, Lincoln is a dynamic and exciting place to live, work, and study.

“What makes BGU such a great place to study is how close and friendly everyone is, you aren't just another face in the crowd. When I lost my hearing during first year, I was bordering on dropping out of my course; BG instead put measures in place to support me and brought me my first set of hearing aids.”
As well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, Bishop Grosseteste University also offers foundation degrees and progression routes for those looking for qualifications in the field of education. It also provides a number of short courses for students who wish to study education-based topics but cannot commit to a full undergraduate degree.
All of the courses at BGU are tailored to prepare students for their working life upon graduation. This includes a variety of extra support including one-to-one meetings and carefully selected placements in settings relevant to the students’ chosen field.
In addition to this, class sizes are deliberately kept small to provide students with a personalised learning experience with the attention and support they need to succeed in their studies.
The university is constantly innovating the range of courses that it offers, with new programmes in areas such as applied health and wellbeing; business and sport; education studies; and mathematics, computing and data science.

Students looking to help reduce the financial burden of their qualification can find out more about the scholarship and bursary options available at the university.
The scholarships included are:
BGU Bursary
£800 for BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) students with a household income of £30,000 or less.
Some additional sums are payable for over-21s, student parents or applicants from areas where few people go into higher education. Students should make sure that they allow their information to be shared with the university when they apply for student finance to be considered.
Care Leavers
For students that are leaving care, they can apply for an enhanced bursary. Students should apply through BGU’s Student Advice service, which will also be able to answer any questions students have about their eligibility.
Students are required to pay annual tuition fees for their course. These costs are:
UK students per year: £9,250
International students per year: £12,455
Students are able to apply to pay their tuition fees over a number of instalments on special request, although most UK students will use a tuition fee loan. This is a standard (non-means tested) loan which almost all students are eligible for, covering the costs of the tuition fees in full. Students would only need to repay this loan once they reach a minimum salary level upon completion of their degree.
Students can also get help with other financial matters through the university’s support team, with tips on budgeting and help finding other means of monetary support.
Loans and other financial support options for international students will vary.
