What is radiography?
Radiography is the science of treating human illness and injuries using radiation techniques. These techniques scan the human body and are used for diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The two types of radiography you can study are diagnostic radiography and therapeutic radiography.
Radiography entry requirements
The UCAS points needed to study radiography range from 96 (CCC at A-level; MMM at BTEC level) to 128 points (ABB at A-level; DDD at BTEC level).

What subjects do you need to study radiography?
A-levels
Most courses will want you to have an A-level in either physics, chemistry or biology/human biology. Some universities will ask for two of these sciences. General studies and critical thinking aren’t often accepted towards your points total.
BTECs
You’ll need at least one science-based subject within your BTEC qualification in most cases. Some courses will want this to be accompanied by one science-based A-level.
GCSEs
Five GCSEs with a grade C/5 or above is needed. You’ll need English, maths and usually a science within these five.
International Baccalaureate
Most courses ask for three Higher Level subjects. One must be a science-based subject, with some courses requiring at least a grade 6 in that science.

How to compare radiography degrees

How to compare radiography degrees in Clearing
Some radiography degrees may still have places available through Clearing, which opens on at the beginning of July every year. You’ll be able to use Whatuni’s Clearing tool to search for and compare what’s available.

What if you can’t find a radiography degree in Clearing?
There are other options to study radiography:
- Study a radiography apprenticeship: An alternative to a bachelor's, a radiography apprenticeship will give you the chance to work while you study. You’ll have to apply through a healthcare provider and courses are approved by the HCPC. Vacancies can be found on the NHS Jobs website and the Find an Apprenticeship website.
- Study an access to Radiography course: This will typically be a one-year course to prepare you for further degree-level study. Entry requirements are much lower for access courses than a bachelor’s degree which makes the course ideal if you didn’t achieve the necessary grades for a radiography degree.
- Take a gap year and resit your exams: If none of these alternatives suit, consider taking a gap year, resit your exams and then apply to start university the following year. You could use your gap year to travel, get work experience and explore both your education and career options.
