Everyone wants to save some money right now, but nobody wants to miss out on socialising with their friends over the summer holidays! As the perfect compromise, we’ve put together a list of activities you can do with your friends wherever you are in the UK and all for affordable prices.

Start a casual football team

If you’ve got a nearby park with goals you can use then great, if not you can always make your own goalposts using a couple of jumpers, and then the only other things you need are a ball, trainers, and a bunch of friends. A very low cost way of keeping active and socialising!

Make DIY friendship bracelets

This one might require a bit more investment, but it’s still pretty affordable. You can get elastic and beads, or just thread, and learn different ways to make friendship bracelets with different patterns and designs. If you buy a bunch of materials, you can split the cost with your friends who you’re making them with, and then you can swap bracelets or pass them out to other friends. A super cute and wholesome activity!

Start a book club

Most books cost under £10, so you can easily keep to a budget and start a book club, but you can also check out the local library and borrow books for free to keep this to a 0 cost activity. You can do it as often as you like – a book a week if you’re super ambitious,  or just one or two over the summer, but book club meet ups are a great excuse to see your friends, spend five minutes talking about the book and then spend the rest of the time having a good old catchup.

Host a ‘dress as your friends’ party

There are a couple of different ways you can do this – you could pick names out of a hat like Secret Santa and have people guess who you’re dressing up as, or you could ditch the secrecy and actually borrow clothes from your friends for a truly authentic experience. This works best if you have quite different dress senses, of course, else you’ll end up just dressing as yourself. There are lots of other fancy dress party ideas you could do cheaply though, so have a think about what themes would be easy for people to throw together.

Create your own outdoor cinema

Ok so for this one you will need a mate with a garden and convenient section of wall with no windows, and a projector. If you can get the garden thing sorted, then you can get a projector for under £50 if nobody already has one. While that isn’t exactly low cost, it’s a worthwhile investment if you’ll use it often, and they’re always a good thing to have at uni, where most people won’t have TVs!

Stargazing

In contrast, stargazing is completely free if you want it to be. All you need is clear sky. There are other things you can get if you fancy it, such as phone apps that will tell you which star is which, or if you know anyone who has a telescope then you can get a better view through that. But really, all you need are your eyes and a clear night!

Start a band

This does require musical friends, and ideally someone already has a drum kit and guitar or something knocking about you can use, but if not you can often get cheap guitars at charity shops or car boots, so looking for one could be part of the fun. Learn to play some songs from your favourite artists, or start writing your own music – it’s up to you.

Take up yoga

All you need for this is appropriate clothing and a yoga mat, which you can get for under £10. There are lots of free videos on YouTube with yoga workouts, just make sure that the person whose videos you’re following knows what they’re doing.

Learn to cook or bake something new

Last but not least, why not learn to cook or bake something new? You could cook for your friends, with your friends, by yourself or for your family and of course you can cook pretty much anything you want as long as the local shops sell the ingredients. And then, the best part – you get to eat it!
