If you’re not in awe its history, the constant buzz of events or the never-ending places to explore, then maybe the variety of food, breadth of shopping, spectacular views or stunning parks will attract you to London.

A melting pot of cultures, food and employment opportunities, London is a world-renowned location for both travellers and students. Students across the city can expect to live amongst the hustle and bustle of famous street markets, iconic red double-decker buses and architecture as old as their grandparents’ grandparents.

London has an array of universities spread across the city that include Goldsmiths, University of London, University of Westminster, Queen Mary University of London and many more. On Whatuni you can find a full list of London universities.

Things to do in London - Hidden gems

You could live in London your whole student life, and it’s unlikely that you would uncover every hidden gem.

Despite the current lockdown forcing many of London’s best spots to close, you’ll be glad to hear that not every hidden gem is inaccessible. Although only allowed some short exercise near you each day, scope out what parks and walks are within your area.

These are some of our top picks that we suggest exploring if they fall within your area. If not, keep them in mind for when restrictions do ease:

  • Kyoto Garden: found in the heart of West London’s Holland Park, take a walk around this Japanese-inspired garden to clear the mind and de-stress.
  • Flash Walk: in Hampstead, take a stroll down this lane to get a glimpse of the pretty lights along with some charming storefronts to revisit post-lockdown.
  • Hampstead Hill Garden and Pergola: tucked away in Hampstead Heath, use this spot as an excuse to go outside, stretch the legs and clear out any cobwebs in the mind.
  • Saint Dunstan in the East Church Garden: the old ruins of a church now converted into a luscious green area, it’s worth paying a visit to this city escape when you have some spare time.
  • Little Venice: slightly north of Paddington, this area is filled with a beautiful canal, pubs and cafes to be explored when you’re wanting to get away from the busy streets.

Eat local in London

Places to eat in London

Thanks to London’s multicultural complexion, Londoners are spoilt for choice even in lockdown. These are our top pandemic picks to get delivery from:

  • Coqfighter: serving up some of the best fried chicken in London, Coqfighter has built itself an amazing reputation - even with vegans!
  • Bite Me Burger Co.: ever wanted to try more than one burger, but always felt too full after only one? Here you can order an array of smaller burgers with unique flavour, at affordable prices.
  • Popham's Bakery: freshly-made pasta, croissant flapjacks, three cheese toasties, artisan coffee... Please do us a favour if you live in Hackney or Islington and hit these guys up if you haven't already.
  • Atis: if you’re feeling something a bit more green and healthy, hit up Atis for well-priced fresh salads, curries, bowls and tasty sides.

Local London food

London’s local dishes are essentially the same as the traditional English food. You have your staples, such as an English breakfast, fish and chips or a Sunday roast. But there are a few delicacies London is well-known for.

  • Scotch Eggs: a local favourite, scotch eggs consist of a soft- or hard-boiled egg, wrapped in sausage meat with a breadcrumb coating. While at home, try your hand at making a scotch egg.
  • Bourbon Biscuits: originating from Bermondsey in London, these thick treats consist of a chocolate buttercream middle with two dark chocolate-flavoured biscuits either side. Christina’s Cucina has a fantastic recipe to have a go at.
  • Espresso Martinis: visit any bar in London and you’ll find the Espresso Martini as a menu staple. In the meantime, they’re super simple to recreate at home. Get yourself a cocktail shaker and test out The Spurce Eats’ guide.
  • Smoked Salmon: not born in London, but definitely made famous there, smoked salmon can be found from high-end dining through to incredibly affordable street food. The John Ross Jr food blog has some mouthwatering recipes to bring this beautiful delicacy straight to your own kitchen.

Remember that London’s diverse influence is reflected in the food on offer throughout the city. During lockdown, take advantage of any business offering a delivery service to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

Alternatively, have a go at making them! A couple of local London food bloggers, @alexskitchenstory and @whatwillycook, will be able to kit you out with all of the recipes you need, along with a plethora of fresh recipes to try out while stuck inside.

Covid testing near me in London

Currently in London, you can either book a free Covid test online via the NHS or book a private test with your GP. If there is someone who lives with you that has Covid symptoms, you can get a test for them too.

You will find that when you book a Covid test at a test site, there should be one close by. There are lots of Covid test sites scattered across London and you can visit the government’s website to find the nearest one to you.

Some students also have the option of booking a Covid test at the University of London’s Student Central Covid test site. The University of London has set up an asymptomatic Covid test site for their students and staff. They have also made it accessible to some students at other London universities. You can find the full list of eligible universities here.

Making friends in London during Covid

Although it is important to remember that you are limited when it comes to physical interactions with friends outside of your home or support bubble at this time, don’t let this fool you into thinking you can’t make friends during Covid.

Be savvy, using the digital resources you have at your disposal.

Do check what virtual events your university and  students’ union are hosting. You can also check Meetup to find people that share an interest of yours.

London events

Virtual events

Lockdown means that the only events currently taking place are virtual events, rather than social distance events.

For upcoming virtual events take a look at Visit London and Events for London. Throughout 2020, London residents had access to live streaming theatre performances from the Royal Opera House, virtual concerts live from the Barbican, virtual movie screenings with Mischief Movie Night In, Borough Market’s online cooking classes and so much more.

Outdoor events

There are no outdoor events taking place in London at the moment. When lockdown restrictions do ease, there will be plenty to attend.

Checking Visit London and Events for London will allow you to keep on top of what’s to come, and get excited for events such as Lovebox Festival, Taste of London, Euro 2020 (now in Summer 2021) and the London Design Festival. In the meantime, get some inspo for your next excursion from the @out_in_london or @millykr Instagram pages.
