Birkbeck, University of London is an institution which continues to change lives. In 2023 the university marks its 200th anniversary. Established in 1823, Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution, well known for being London’s premier evening university. Most classes take place in the evening, and this makes Birkbeck stand out from the crowd. Birkbeck students have the freedom and flexibility to use their daytimes however they like - a benefit that has become the university’s trademark.
Evening study means not having to make the choice between getting a job or going to university – students can do both, which means more school leavers and college students are choosing to study here. Students can use daytime freedom to take an internship role or gain relevant work experience, all of which helps them to stand out in an increasingly competitive graduate job market.
With a global reputation for high-quality research, Birkbeck is part of the prestigious University of London in Bloomsbury, Central London. All facilities and support services are tailored towards evening study, including an in-house careers service to help students find work at university and after graduation.
Birkbeck takes pride in the wide variety of competitive degree programs that it offers. Students can choose from more than 100 full-time and part-time undergraduate courses. There are also short study courses, certificates of higher education, and more than 200 postgraduate programmes available. Birkbeck has one of the most comprehensive offerings of evening courses found at any university in the UK.
There is also an option to apply for a degree with a foundation year, which is ideal if a student doesn’t meet the entry requirements for a chosen degree, or feels they need more support at university.
Classes are held between 6pm and 9pm, with full-time study (three or four evenings a week) taking three years, or part-time study taking four to six years. As a guideline, students can expect to study alone for two hours for every hour of face-to-face teaching. Reviewers rate the courses and teaching staff highly.

GET PROSPECTUSStudents can apply to study at Birkbeck through UCAS (for full-time, three-year evening-taught courses) or directly to the institution (for part-time evening-taught courses, offered as both four-year and six-year courses). Reflecting the diversity of its student body, Birkbeck welcomes a variety of alternative admission pathways, for those who may not have traditional entry qualifications. Decisions are based on the university’s own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience, and take into account:
The university understands that many applicants will not hold a UCAS tariff score, however, the admissions team will consider all recently completed qualifications which have a UCAS tariff equivalent. These include A-levels, IB, GNVQs and BTEC programmes.
Birkbeck encourages applications from students without traditional qualifications and welcomes students from all educational backgrounds. The university’s admissions tutors take into account the knowledge and skills that applicants have developed outside the classroom, as well as previous qualifications.
Full information about the UCAS tariff points required for admission can be found on course-specific pages.
