BA (Hons) Game Development: Programming

COURSE OVERVIEW

Become a gameplay programmer who implements and tests the core mechanics of the game and evaluates how players interact with them. This exciting degree explores the fundamentals of game development and programming, giving you the skills needed to operate as a programmer in multidisciplinary teams that produce vibrant and innovative games.

From day one, you’ll work as you would within a team in the industry, developing your own games in collaboration with our game development: art students. You’ll replicate professional practice, learning in a range of environments to discover your specialism and prepare for the career you want. You will develop a multi-disciplinary approach, using Unity and Unreal to touch upon all aspects of game creation. Throughout the course, you will learn how to manage and contribute your skills to both small and large projects, and you’ll graduate a creative and resilient content developer with a specialist game programming skillset.

You'll learn how different specialisms work together, how to work effectively in a team and to develop the role you play within it. You will gain an in-depth knowledge of the importance of the various roles involved and how they interrelate through the development pipeline. You will develop a range of project management skills, including the use of ‘Agile’ management techniques, that will support in applying your growing body of knowledge to practical game-making and assist in the creative process of innovative game development.

WHAT WILL MY LEARNING EXPERIENCE LOOK LIKE?

Game making is the primary form of assessment, in addition to coursework based assessment and will include practical projects, developing portfolios, pitches and essay-based assignments.

On average you should allow for between 40 - 50 hours per week for your studies of which approximately 25% will be taught (c.10 hours) and 75% will be self-study.
