Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I really enjoyed my time at UCLan, as an undergraduate. I have enjoyed it so much that I have stayed on here to complete my postgraduate studies. I really enjoyed being involved in university life and took on various roles as an undergraduate, including Student Ambassador and Course Representative. I feel there is quite a good range of societies to join at the University and that there is something for everyone.
From my course point of view, my course lecturers have been absolutely brilliant and I felt nothing but support throughout my time on my course. This was very important in my final year as this is a time where students feel extremely stressed. Having supportive lecturers really does ease the pressure and knowing that you can speak to your lecturers about your studies makes you feel like you are not on your own.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
I think the University facilities are excellent, especially the use of a 24/7 library and quiet computer rooms in each campus building. I have found that I have been able to keep up to date with my work, right across campus and having these facilities means there is no excuse to fall behind. From a safety point of view, having 24 hour security is also very helpful. They are only a quick walk or phone call away and they always help you and get your issues dealt with as soon as possible. The University Maintenance Service is also very impressive. If there is a problem in your flat and something is broken, Maintenance will come to your flat and get it fixed in the same day. I have found all of these three services very useful.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I feel the disability support at UCLan really does help with your needs. I can always contact my library assistant, one to one tutor or note-taking and mobility agencies quite quickly and get any changes made to my support. I found it easier as an undergraduate to add changes or remove them as and when I needed to. In my final year especially, I was supported by two great note-takers who would always go the extra mile to make sure that I had a note-taker present for extra things such as dissertation supervisions or tutorials.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
As an undergraduate I was involved with the Students Union in various forms. I joined a few societies when I first started University and I really enjoyed attending society meetings and opening my mind to new knowledge. I also enjoyed being involved with the SU in other ways, such as Course Representative and finding the application forms in the SU for the Student Ambassador role.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
To this day I still don't fully know my way around Preston. I think the majority of the campus is well located and only a short walk away from the city centre. I also like how the University help put events on in the city centre, so students don't always have to stay on campus.
I am not a drinking or clubbing type student but I still feel there is plenty to do around campus or in the city centre. I quite enjoy attending events in the SU bar, such as live music or going to a guest speaker seminar on an evening. I also enjoyed attending society meetings as an undergraduate or going to live music gigs in the city centre.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I enjoyed being involved in a range of societies as an undergraduate. I was a member of the Law and Philosophy societies. As a postgraduate, I am also a member of the Disabled Students Society.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
As I have previously mentioned, the support from my lecturers has been second to none. My course leader was wonderful throughout the whole 3 years on my course and each academic year, I found lecturers who I felt were very supportive and could help me in any situation. This was extremely noticeable in my final year of my course as I found 2 lecturers who I felt were very helpful and supportive.
There was a lot of help given regarding assignments during my course and I felt even half an hour discussing an assignment, was all I needed to help me and get the ball rolling on what I needed to do. Lecturers were also able to take time out of their schedule to help you catch up on a lecture (this was extremely important if a student required note-taking support but their note-taker did not arrive for a particular lecture). I found a great mixture of lecturers on my course and I felt my lecturers really enhanced my course experience.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
With regards to my career, I would like to join the police force in the future. With my degree programme, I had an opportunity to choose modules which had links and connections to my future career. I found choosing modules surrounding the areas of law and crime rather easy, even though I was studying an English Language degree. Choosing a range of modules also helped me realise that there is much more to English Language than meets the eye and it made me realise that the use of language is extensive and not just focused on the areas of language and education or teaching.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
My time with Accommodation was very hit and miss throughout my time as an undergraduate. I travelled in my first year of study but lived on campus for my second and final year. I had problems with my flatmates in my second year, which the Accommodation department never resolved. However, I did get along with my flatmates in my final year and enjoyed my living in halls experience for that year.
